NF S61-942 Compliant Threat Alarms for Fire Systems

Circulaire n°2015-205 requires French educational establishments to implement terror alert procedures. NF S61-942 allows threat alarming devices to be incorporated into fire systems. Eaton offers a range of conformant sounders and beacons, streamlining alert management. Why install two standalone systems when Eaton’s certified devices integrate easily into one?

Introduction to the NF S61-942 Standard

Introduced for France, the NF S61-942 Standard authorises the use of a fire safety system broadcasting sound and light information that provokes appropriate behavior (evacuation or confinement) in the face of a threat (armed attack, hostage-taking, riot, etc.).

The NF S61-942 standard complies with the provisions of the Threat Alert Chain recommendations published by the General Secretariat for Defence and National Security (SGDSN) within the Guide to Good Practices for the Security of Public Spaces.

In Detail: NF S61-942

Purpose

The NF S61-942 Threat Alarm standard, published in December 2022, outlines the requirements for integrating Threat Alarms (Diffuseur Alarme Menace, or DAM, in French) into fire safety systems.

It defines the expected functionalities of the systems’ constituent parts as well as their installation conditions.

What are Threat Alarms?

A Threat Alarm communicates to building occupants that they should take appropriate action (evacuation or confinement) in the face of a threat (armed attacks, hostage-taking, riots, chemical danger, etc.), with the aim of limiting panic and the number of victims. The Threat Alarm can be broadcast generally and/or selectively. A general Threat Alarm is used to warn all building occupants, while the selective Threat Alarm is used to limit the information to certain categories of people.

Types of NF S61-942 Peripherals

For threat alarms that may be integrated into a fire detection system, the NF S61-942 standard has defined different types of NF-certified peripherals, each equipped with a black sticker of approval.

Threat Alarm Units

Also defined by NF S61-942, the Threat Alarm Unit is an additional function, integrated into the central fire safety system, that ensures the management of the threat alarm process.

  • It benefits from a distinct facet dedicated to threat alarm management
  • It provides a 5-minute threat alarm broadcast capacity
  • It monitors the proper functioning of the threat alarm devices
